Changes to Reporting at CCS

Dear Parents,

 The most traditional means of reporting to parents has always come in the form of Report Cards.  Report Cards are valuable in that they represent a “snapshot” of a student’s learning at a specific point in time.  A couple of shortcomings of the traditional report card are that they are infrequent and they sometimes are difficult to interpret. 

 The best communication about student learning is concise, meaningful to students and parents, and frequent.  To this end, we are changing a little about our reporting practices this year.  Here are the changes you can look forward to:

 1)     The Interim Report, previously sent out in early October, will now be sent out in late October AND mid-March.  The Interim Reports will now include not just reporting on Work Habits, but will also include information on academic progress in Christian Education, Literacy, and Numeracy.

2)     Teachers in ALL grades are required to use online methods of reporting.  For Grades K-3/4 this will take the form of Class Dojo.  For Students in Grades 4-7 this will be done using Google Classroom.  Teachers are hard at work preparing these services and will have them operational by the end of October.

3)     Traditional Progress Reports will be sent home twice this year; in January and June.  The June Progress Report will be a summative document encompassing the entire year’s learning.

4)     In addition to 3-Way Conferences and Student Led Conferences, student will also have a “Portfolio Presentation Project” near the end of the school year.  Students will be tasked with making a presentation to their class (and their parents if they choose to attend) on their learning.

5)     In alignment with the Catholic Independent Schools of the Vancouver Archdiocese (CISVA) Reporting Guidelines, letter grades will only be given on Progress Reports for students in Grades 6 & 7.

 Our hope with these changes is that reporting is seen as an ongoing communication between students, teachers, and parents that instills a “growth mindset” and helps students become lifelong learners.
